24. From Emissions to Solutions: Unpacking the IRA’s Impact on Climate Change
Wednesday Feb 28, 2024
Wednesday Feb 28, 2024
According to the Department of Energy, the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) of 2022 “makes the single largest investment in climate and energy in American history.” Key provisions of the legislation were designed to incentivize clean energy and carbon management, encourage electrification and efficiency measures, reduce methane emissions, promote domestic supply chains, and address environmental justice concerns.
A group of more than 30 scientists from 17 organizations across the country joined in co-authoring an influential article in Science magazine that used different state-of-the-art models to analyze potential implications of key IRA provisions, particularly on emissions and energy systems. Among the findings of the modeling…IRA provisions may help produce economy-wide emissions reductions between 43 and 48% below 2005 levels by 2035.
Join host Bill Florence as he talks with two of the authors of the Science article about their modeling work and the IRA’s potential climate impacts:
Dr. John Bistline, Program Manager of EPRI’s Energy Systems and Climate Analysis Group
Dr. Jesse Jenkins, Assistant Professor of the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering and the Andlinger Center for Energy & Environment at Princeton University.
